In the Holy Land of 1291, a group of crusader knights known as the Order of the Sword fight and destroy a band of vampires. The knights drink their enemies' blood in triumph and, to their horror, become vampires themselves. They withdraw to a castle in Europe. |

|
Move forward to the twentieth century during World War II. An SS officer finds the castle and drinks the blood of one of the knights. The infection spreads anew. Now in modern day Los Angeles Detective John Drummond investigates a series of murders linked to the SS. |

At age thirty-six, Roscoe Bird has a settled, relatively happy life with his wife Marianne. All that changes when Peter Tummelier, a friend from his teenage years, shows up one evening. Peter brings up the unhappy event of twenty years before when Roscoe's father committed suicide. He names those responsible for the father's despondency people like the Burtons. People he is sure Roscoe must hate. Peter wants to know who else might be on that hate list. Then before taking his leave he makes this confession. He is a vampire and he has killed the Burtons. Roscoe discovers to his horror that at least the latter is true. Then other murders occur and all have a link to Roscoe. The setting is Washington, DC, and Florida. |
